Toyota powers up 1.1 MW PEM fuel cell generator at Torrance headquarters campus; direct H2 pipeline feed

17 October 2012

activated a new 1.1-megawatt hydrogen fuel cell generator on the Torrance headquarters campus. The fuel cell will supply approximately half of the electricity for six headquarters buildings during peak demand.
Toyota Motor Sales USA (TMS)
Designed and built by Ballard Power Systems, the proprietary Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) stationary fuel cell is the largest PEM fuel cell of its kind. The fuel cell is powered by hydrogen gas fed directly from a pre-existing industrial hydrogen pipeline, also a first for this technology. This direct power source allows Toyota to reduce utility grid electricity usage during peak power demand. The same hydrogen pipeline also supplies a hydrogen filling station adjacent to the TMS campus used to fuel Toyota’s and other manufacturers fuel cell hybrid vehicle fleets.
At 1.1 MW, the clean energy fuel cell system on average provides enough power for about 765 homes, twice the capacity of Toyota’s existing solar panel system on campus. It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 3.3 million pounds during summer peak period operating hours, the equivalent to taking 294 cars off the road a year.
Hydrogen within the dedicated pipeline is provided by Air Products and created from natural gas reformation. To mitigate emissions from the reformation process, hydrogen used on Toyota’s campus will be offset with the purchase of landfill generated renewable bio-gas. Operation of the stationary fuel cell creates zero air emissions.
Electricity generated by the fuel cell fuel is expected to save Toyota approximately $130,000 a year in reduced energy purchased from Southern California Edison.
Additional project funding was provided by Sustainable Development Technology Canada and California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program.

Facebook grabs all the glory when it comes to efficient operations, but eBay is working hard behind the scenes to produce a data center that consumes less power but still sustains $68 billion a year in transactions. It's the first major data center in the U.S. to employ fuel cells as its primary power source. Data centers represent 2% of the electricity consumed in the U.S., a figure that is expected to go higher as a massive build-out occurs to provide cloud services, support more powerful websites and provide application services to millions of mobile phones. There's also a rivalry underway among major Web service providers to build the most efficient facility with the least environmental impact.

From a noxious gas point of view, the least polluting electricity production is hydro power. Amazon.com and Microsoft have built data centers in the Pacific Northwest that rely primarily on hydroelectric power. But not all data center builders have the option of locating there. eBay, now a mature Web services company, has introduced some new wrinkles in that competition.
EBay first established a more conventional unit in its Topaz data center, which opened in May 2010 on a 60-acre site outside Salt Lake City. In its second phase, dubbed Project Quicksilver, eBay implemented fuel cells as an onsite power source to generate six megawatts of electricity. It used the public utility grid as its backup power source, which allowed eBay to do away with the uninterruptible power supply and backup generators that are a standard and expensive part of traditional data centers' design ...

the United Kingdom is putting serious capital towards funding hundreds of new low carbon buses

Mercedes Fuel Cell Buses Begin Service In Germany

It seems as if there’s a lot happening these days in the development and deployment of greener forms of public buses. There was the recent announcement of a quick charge electric bus pilot in Switzerland, as well as word the United Kingdom is putting serious capital towards funding hundreds of new low carbon buses. Meanwhile, in the US, Chinese manufacturing giant BYD is planning to build electric buses in California, while at the same time there are wireless charging pilots going on.
One particular low carbon bus type coming more and more into consideration are those powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Mercedes-Benz is one of those exploring this avenue, recently announcing the opening of a fuel cell filling station at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. The shuttles tied to this station will be two Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid fuel-cell buses, which will be linking students and employees between two different campus sections.

Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid fuel-cell buses (image via Daimler)
The technology in these fuel cell buses makes use of fuel-cell stacks, identical to those in the Mercedes-Benz B-Class FCELL with a fuel-cell drive system, and hybridization with lithium-ion batteries (27 kW/h). With all of this green tech under the hood, according to Daimler, the Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid reportedly
saves 50 percent more hydrogen than the predecessor generation, from which it benefits for the planned shuttle service. It has been possible to reduce the number of tanks compared to the earlier tried-and-tested fuel-cell buses from nine to seven reservoirs for a total of 35 kg of hydrogen. And where the FuelCELL Hybrid drive system is concerned, too, the engineers have focused on sustainability: As a power supplier the fuel cell is intelligently linked with several components. Both the battery and electric wheel hub drive and also the integral braking energy recuperation system are networked with one another.
The fuel-cell buses are said to have a range of over 300 kilometres (186 miles) and the filling time at the new filling station is eight to ten minutes. They join other initiatives where these types of buses are planned or already deployed, including Norway and California.

Hyundai: with limited infrastructure, fuel cells will be 'one of' future green technologies
By  Sebastian Blanco RSS feed Google+ Posted Jun 14th 2013 2:03PM

For Hyundai, the fuel cell market is a global affair. Built in Korea and launching now in Europe, Hyundai's first production hydrogen vehicle is the ix35 Fuel Cell, a CUV that will be known as the Tucson Fuel Cell when it comes to the US. As hydrogen vehicles become more and more a real thing for Hyundai – and other automakers – we thought we'd ask how things look through the company's fuel cell prism. So we asked Miles Johnson, Hyundai's senior manager of midwest product public relations, to run us through the automaker's thoughts on building hydrogen cars for the US.

It's clear Hyundai firmly believes in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), despite two big hurdles: refueling infrastructure and cost. The company's first FCEV is expensive, but Johnson said that Hyundai is working on getting the price down to an "affordable price" as it gets ready for mass production and consumer retail "beyond 2015." FCEVs are getting a bit assist in Korea, where the government offers an incentive that cuts the "upgrade cost" in half. Governments in Europe are also providing financial assistance for FCEVs and refueling stations.

First Hydrogen from E.ON Power-to-Gas Plant Injected into the Natural Gas Grid

14 Jun 2013

Falkenhagen
E.ON has injected hydrogen from its power-to-gas demonstration plant in Falkenhagen into the natural gas grid for the first time. The plant, which is still under construction, takes electricity from a nearby wind farm to power Hydrogenics electrolysers which create hydrogen for injection into the natural gas grid. During the test run 160 cubic metres of hydrogen was successfully injected over the space of an hour. When the plant comes online – currently scheduled for the end of August – it will inject 360 cubic metres an hour of renewable hydrogen.
For more on the project, and the concept of power-to-gas in general, please see Section 6.2 Hydrogen Injection into the Natural Gas Grid in our recent report ‘Water Electrolysis & Renewable Energy Systems’.

Obama Advocates $2 Billion Fund for Advanced Cars, Fuels | Environment News Service

ARGONNE, Illinois, March 15, 2013 (ENS) – President Barack Obama today again called on Congress to establish a $2 billion Energy Security Trust for investments in research that will make the vehicle and fuel technologies of the future cheaper and better.
Speaking at the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago, where scientists have done breakthrough research in advanced batteries, President Obama reiterated the Energy Security Trust proposal he made in his State of the Union speech last month.

Concerned about the chilling effect of sequester budget cuts on scientific advancement, President Obama said an Energy Security Trust would help to keep scientists working. A trust fund would allow the government to “support American ingenuity without adding a dime to our deficit,” Obama said.
“We can support scientists who are designing new engines that are more energy efficient; support scientists that are developing cheaper batteries that can go farther on a single charge; support scientists and engineers that are devising new ways to fuel our cars and trucks with new sources of clean energy – like advanced biofuels and natural gas – so drivers can one day go coast to coast without using a drop of oil,” the President said.

E.ON Invests €91.5 million in Californian Fuel Cell Manufacturer Bloom Energy

11 Jun 2013

European energy company E.ON has invested €91.5 million in Californian solid oxide fuel cell manufacturer Bloom Energy, bringing the emergent company’s total investment over the last decade to a cool $1.2 billion. The company has seen increasing demand for its electricity-led Energy Server fuel cells in the last four years, first in California and now across the USA. High-profile customers include tech giants Apple, Google, Adobe and eBay, as well as US communications network AT&T, Bank of America and Walmart.
E.ON is based in Düsseldorf, Germany and is the world’s largest investor-owned electricity utility. The company is no stranger to fuel cells and hydrogen thanks to its ongoing relationship with micro combined heat and power fuel cell manufacturer Ceramic Fuel Cells and its flagship wind-to-hydrogen plant, currently under construction in Falkenhagen, Germany, which uses Hydrogenics electrolysers to demonstrate the power-to-gas concept. The investment in Bloom makes sense for the company, which is trying to reduce its carbon intensity, though it is interesting to note that E.ON has not operated a US subsidiary since 2010 and Bloom Energy is yet to install a fuel cell system overseas. Such a substantial investment may mean that the door to Europe is now open for Bloom.

Russian billionaire and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich pictured with David Beckham at a FIFA meeting.
Roman Abramovich is best known as the autocratic Russian billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club. But it is by no means his only business interest.
He and his best friend and business partner, Eugene Shvidler, have their fingers in many pies, including a small AIM firm, AFC Energy, that plans to transform the way large industrial companies use electricity.
Abramovich invested $A13.76 million (Pound8.7 million) in AFC late last year and won a seat on the board for his friend Shvidler in return. Six weeks ago, Shvidler bought 12 million AFC shares, spending just over A$4.9 million (Pound3.1 million.)
Nine million shares were bought from Abramovich, while the rest were picked up from AFC employees. Abramovich now owns 10.8 per cent while Shvidler owns 5.4 per cent.
AFC has adapted a fuel cell technology originally used in US and Russian spacecraft during the 1960s. The technology worked perfectly in space but the materials used were so expensive that nobody could find a way to put the system to commercial use on earth.

A huge fuel cell park planned for the power grid in Connecticut — Tech News and Analysis

A huge fuel cell park planned for the power grid in Connecticut — Tech News and Analysis

Will rock bottom natural gas prices help get more fuel cell parks built? Last week FuelCell Energy announced that it has scored a deal to sell its fuel cells to power company Dominion Power, which will build one of the largest fuel cell projects in the U.S. The fuel cell farm, which will be owned by Dominion but will sell power to utility Connecticut Light and Power Company, will use five 2.8 MW fuel cells from FuelCell Energy and will be 14.9 MW in size, or provide enough power for 15,000 homes.
The move is unusual in that there’s few power companies and utilities buying fuel cell power in the U.S. at this point. Fuel cell power tends to be more expensive than centralized power from power plants that use low cost fossil fuels. But the deal between Dominion and the utility is a power purchase agreement over 15 years, so Connecticut Light and Power will buy the power over a decade and a half at a fixed low rate. The fuel cells in the project will also use natural gas as the fuel, and natural gas prices are really low right now.
Perhaps the combo of new financing models and cheap natural gas will lead to an era of more and more fuel cell getting put into the ground. Fuel cell startup Bloom Energy also sells fuel cell energy using power purchase agreements over long periods of time.
FCE Korea
The fuel cell farm in Connecticut will be built in the city of Bridgeport on 1.7 acres of land and the first fuel cells will start to be installed in the Summer of 2013. The project is supposed to be operational by the end of 2013. FuelCell Energy says it will generate $125 million with the deal, including $56 million from selling the hardware and $69 million in services, and the project will also contribute to the state’s renewable energy mandates, and provide 160 jobs.
FuelCell Energy also sold a 11.2 MW fuel cell project project to Korean power producer Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in Daegu City, South Korea. Bloom Energy has a planned 30 MW fuel cell deal with Delmarva Power.
Internet companies have been as active as utilities, when it comes to using fuel cells to power their data centers. Apple is building a huge fuel cell farm in North Carolina (of which it just doubled the size), eBay is building one, too, and Microsoft is also experimenting with the technology.
